The Dome

Author’s Note: This is an essay for Theme analysis, Quotes from texts, and Organization.  Also how in relationship with other books power and control mean everything.

Moms, dads, teacher all adults nowhere to be found gone in the blink of an eye. Kids looking around confused wondering did that just happen or am I crazy. In the book Gone, by Michael Grant the kids of Perdido Beach experience a life changing event, after everybody above 14 disappear. The book shows just how all kids would react with no one to tell them what to do.

One reason the book shows how kids would react is by the author creating the situation in the book. Just like real life the author tells how some kids would lead, and other would look up to others. After all grownups disappear other kids think of it as a joke till people start to freak out. Other kids take control and find a way to help out others, but some others try to get all the power and rule the town. Using bullies and other mysterious ways to get the power.

The author also added a strange twist to the story that will surprise many reader of the book. Adding the strange effect also changed the way the events happened in the book. Many people realizing eventually food and other supplies would run out. Just like what Sam a main character of the book said “ We don’t have much supplies and these powers are going to people’s heads”, but symbolism is also used to describe some of the events.

The author uses not a lot but enough to describe some events that happen in the book. When Astrid said “ The power and fear is pulling people to pitch black hole of hopelessness” which is symbolism.  Black in symbolism means evil or tragedy which was a good choice for the event happening in the book.  Another is when Lana was dyeing and said “ I see the most amazing white light but she was pulled back by the movement of my right arm”.  Saying she had saw a bright light which was symbolism, because light means piece for her. Also after Lana’s accident she was in the dessert with cactuses and vultures circling her, both represent tragedy or death.

The author uses symbolism in the story to give clues of what may happen. Also chooses strange event to add on the excitement and suspense to the story. So next time you read a book look for symbolism to give clues on what might happen.
