The Dome

Author’s Note: This is an essay for Theme analysis, Quotes from texts, and Organization.  Also how in relationship with other books power and control mean everything.

Moms, dads, teacher all adults nowhere to be found gone in the blink of an eye. Kids looking around confused wondering did that just happen or am I crazy. In the book Gone, by Michael Grant the kids of Perdido Beach experience a life changing event, after everybody above 14 disappear. The book shows just how all kids would react with no one to tell them what to do.

One reason the book shows how kids would react is by the author creating the situation in the book. Just like real life the author tells how some kids would lead, and other would look up to others. After all grownups disappear other kids think of it as a joke till people start to freak out. Other kids take control and find a way to help out others, but some others try to get all the power and rule the town. Using bullies and other mysterious ways to get the power.

The author also added a strange twist to the story that will surprise many reader of the book. Adding the strange effect also changed the way the events happened in the book. Many people realizing eventually food and other supplies would run out. Just like what Sam a main character of the book said “ We don’t have much supplies and these powers are going to people’s heads”, but symbolism is also used to describe some of the events.

The author uses not a lot but enough to describe some events that happen in the book. When Astrid said “ The power and fear is pulling people to pitch black hole of hopelessness” which is symbolism.  Black in symbolism means evil or tragedy which was a good choice for the event happening in the book.  Another is when Lana was dyeing and said “ I see the most amazing white light but she was pulled back by the movement of my right arm”.  Saying she had saw a bright light which was symbolism, because light means piece for her. Also after Lana’s accident she was in the dessert with cactuses and vultures circling her, both represent tragedy or death.

The author uses symbolism in the story to give clues of what may happen. Also chooses strange event to add on the excitement and suspense to the story. So next time you read a book look for symbolism to give clues on what might happen.

Being Figurative

Author’s Note: Figurative language is to make something sound more extravagant or add meaning to the too something that you write. I wrote this to explain how figurative language can be used.

A lot of writing can be extremely boring or gloomy. A lot of books or writing can be that way without any figurative language. Figurative language can make something as cool as a guy juggling balls on fire.  Just like in the poem “A Hillside Thaw” figurative language is used to tell his emotions of what he sees.

The poem “A Hillside Thaw’s” author Robert Frost uses personification to add life and creativity to his extraordinary poem. Personification is giving inanimate object human capabilities like running or talking. In this poem the author uses personification to make water drops come alive. One interesting phrase the author used was “The light braking on them made them run” speaking about the dripping water. Using the figurative language also added a calm and peaceful tone to the poem.

Frost also uses simile in this piece to add more expression and impact by comparing it to something else. Such as when he says, “It looks as if some magic of the sun lifted the rug that bred them on the floor. The meaning of his words was as the sun come up the ice starts to melt and the drops are hitting the ground. He also uses metaphors to describe the day and night. Such as when he said “The sun’s a wizard” and “The moons a witch” he is using good and evil in its place.

The tone was changed constantly as the type of figurative language changed, but just like point of view it also changes the way you interpret it. Such as when he talks about the time of day changing, when he talks about the sun being a wizard you think of a someone kind and good, when he talks about the moon being a witch you think evil and Dark.

The poem “A Hillside thaw” had lots of different figurative language that made it sound exquisite. It also changed to tone of the poem and also the mood. The way he used figurative language made the poem extremely entertaining. That is what figurative language is and how it is can improve your writing and make it more exciting.

1.    The types of figurative language being used is simile, metaphor, and personification.
2.    The author uses this language to add life to the poem he wrote.
 3. The overall impact of the language makes the tone of poem magical and full of life. The impact of the language also makes the mood of the reader amused or entertained. The language makes the characters intimate or lifeless things, such as when he says that the water from the ice cycles are lizards he’s trying to catch.

The Way You See

Author’s Note: I wrote this essay to show how good it is if I actually tried. The book is very good and people who like books about wars I recommend it for you.

In the book The Boy Who Dared, in the times of war when the Nazi’s ruled most of Germany, many families were with the war or against it, most people persuading others to see Hitler as they do. Helmuth a middle aged tells how his point of view got him locked up and in line for execution, and how the soldiers seen him. Every situation that he is in there is always a different point of view by others.

In Helmuth’s point of view the reader sees things differently other than the point of view of somebody else. Such as when Helmuth’s brother is sent out to war it is horrifying for Helmuth, but his brother Gerhard thought of it as a great opportunity to become a hero. The reader usually feels the way the character does that is telling the story. For example when Helmuth says” Hitler is a mad man” the reader feels that he possibly a bad person. He also said “Hitler is tearing this country apart and killing our soldiers” makes you think that Hitler is a bad leader too. So the reader sees Hitler as bad all together.

How the story is told by Helmuth really affects the way the reader sees everything, but if they point of view would change the reader would have different perspectives of the characters. If Hitler was telling the story I would think that Hitler is good instead of thinking he is ruining the country.  Another idea is if it was one of Helmuth’s friends who think that he is crazy, most of the readers would decide that Helmuth is crazy for what he is doing. So how the point of view is told does affect the way that the reader interprets the character.

Changing the point of view will change the way you see the story. Having a clear point of view of the story is very important to understand what is going on. Point of view really does matter in many ways, like what if the character that the point of view is in has nothing to do with the story.

The creation of santa

Author's note: It was fun piece to write.

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Tim. He always misbehaved so one day his parents had an idea. They told the him that when he does not behave a man named Santa can see him. The Tim ask why do I need to behave for him. So the parents said that if you do he brings you extraordinary gifts . So the little boy asked when does he bring the presents. So they said on December twenty fifth so the little boy waited until then that marvelous day . The parents thought while Tim was sleeping where would they put the gifts, so they put a tree up in the living room and decorated it with spectacular ornaments. The morning came and Tim went down stairs and found lot of treats in his socks and presents under the tree. The boy asked what is the day was called the parents thought quick and said Christmas. So the tradition went on and his parents told their friends, and the tradition went on and is still celebrated today.

Through The Eyes of A Boy

Author’s note: I am giving the point of view thru the eyes of Nathanial.

Seeing thru the eyes of a young kid may be different than thru adults. Especially when the boy is a slave who is very shy and also lost his parents. The book is about a boy named Nathanial who is back in the time of the revolutionary war. After losing his mom and not knowing his dad he is turned into a slave. He tries his best to not get in trouble, but it may not last long.

Nathanial in the book Give Me Liberty by L. M. Elliott has many perspectives of people. Many of the people Nathanial thinks are horrible and cruel people. In the beginning he talks of how most of them are chunky guys with shabby beards, but one who saves him from his previous owner. His name was Basil to Nathanial he was the nicest person he ever met. Basil always thought well about him to, and others thought badly about Nathanial.

Owen was the name of Nathanial’s previous owner. He only thought of him as a pest, but needed him to help with blacksmithing. Many of the other buyers that thought about buying Nathanial did not like the way he looked. When Owen was whipping him he thought of him himself as big and bad. Others around watching Owen whip him thought of him as a bad person, and many other stories’s had thing just like this.

The book The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor has many people with different points of view. Such as Alyss’s aunt Redd who sees Alyss as a brat trying to steal her throne. Alyss knowing that Redd is nothing but an evil person who killed her parents tries to take the throne away. Just like Nathanial they both try staying out of trouble, and finding justice for their parents.

So both in The Looking Glass Wars and Give Me Liberty they have different points of view. Some are good and some are bad depending on who they are. Adult and kids have different points of view but sometimes they are the same.

A Boy With Courage

Author’s note: I will be writing about the theme which is courage. There are many books I the book but there is only one main one.

At first I did not like to book, it was slow and really boring. Then towards the middle of the book things got more exciting. I think the theme is courage because that is what the main character shows a lot. He took his uncles job almost died many times and never stopped trying. No one else could do the things that he did.

It takes a lot of courage to be a spy. In the book “ STORMBREAKER”  By  Anthony Horowitz, Alex Rider’s uncle dies but not in the way they think. Having no one to take his place Alex is asked. In this story the theme is courage. Along with many others books courage is what the main character has.

Even though the theme is courage there are still many others. Just like many other stories there is always bravery. Just like in the book Give me liberty By L.M.Elliott  Nathanial show courage, bravery, good willing.  Alex shows a lot of bravery in the book, but he also is good willing. He instead of just helping himself he helps others. Also like in the book Touching Spirit Bear instead of Cole helping himself he also helps others like peter.

In conclusion every story has a great theme that goes along with the character. In this case it had many different themes. Courage was the theme and most people it take a lot of courage to do a certain thing. Courage is known as going face to face with pain and grief, which in this case Alex Rider was able to do.

Comparing Book to Movie

Author’s note: I am comparing and contrasting a movie and a book. The movie and the book are great, but I think that I like the movie more than the book.

Imagine when people used to ride horses for transportation, or used candles to light there house at night. That is how it is in the movie The Patriot, and in the book Give Me Liberty. There are many things that you can compare and contrast between the movie and book.

One of the first things that are the same is it is based around the same time in the movie and book. 1775–1783 was the time of the revolutionary war which is the time setting in both the story and movie. In Give me Liberty they talk of the war and how it works and The Patriot shows it. The biggest topic they bring up all the time between both of them is war, but they also have many differences too.

A difference between the movie and the book is different point of view. The movies point of view is by a third person so you see everything that is going on. It is different in the book it’s a first person point of view, everything is being told by a slave who is traveling with a musician. Sense the story is told by a young kid he does not know as much so it does not talk about as much.

In the movie it talks about slavery and shows them and free used to be slaves. The books talks about slaves and how the character is a slave, but does not talk about any free slaves. Both books talk about how if slaves join the war they will have their freedom given to them.

In conclusion they both have many alike things, but also has just as many different things. So they both have slaves that will be granted freedom. They are based in the same time, and talks of war a lot of the time.
